Meet the Characters
The Quoll, the Pobblebonk and the Big Race
Sam
Sam is a ten-year-old boy who is always getting into trouble at school. There is nothing he relishes
more than exploring the bushland, particularly with his best friend, Quoll. At times, Sam reveals a
cheeky side to his character, but he can be counted upon to be a dependable friend. This is
showcased when they search for Quoll’s missing pups together, and they encounter many hurdles
such as meeting the high and mighty Pobblebonk.

Quoll
Quoll is a meek, loving mother of six pups and kind-hearted friend to Sam. She is highly
impressionable, therefore is often led by the more dominant character, Sam. Despite the many
challenges encountered in their quest to find her pups, like the vicious storm, she embodies the true
values of friendship and forgiveness.

Pobblebonk
Pobblebonk is perceived as the selfish ruler of the cave in the Australian native bushland, who is
feared by many. He displays a pompous attitude that creates humour in the book. The finger is often
pointed at him as the culprit of many pranks, like Quoll’s life-threatening fall into a well.
However, could this story offer a chance for redemption?
